Module guide: WhatsApp action trigger

Trigger automation flows based on WhatsApp message actions.

Before You Start

Before using the WhatsApp Action trigger in your automation flows, make sure your WhatsApp integration is fully set up in the User.com platform. Moreover, you need to prepare the Whatsapp campaigns first to be able to use them in the automations.

Only after these two steps are completed will the WhatsApp Action trigger be able to track interactions and initiate flows based on them.

What the Module Does

The WhatsApp Action trigger in User.com initiates an automation flow based on specific WhatsApp-related events. These include:

  • Message Sent: A WhatsApp message was successfully sent to a user.

  • Message Opened: A user opened the WhatsApp message.

  • User Unsubscribed: A user clicked the unsubscribe button and opted out of future WhatsApp communication. ("Unsubscribed from WhatsApp" attribute gets the "true" value).

With this trigger, you can automatically follow up on user engagement to streamline your messaging workflows and improve timing.

How to Configure

Find the "WhatsApp Action" trigger in the "Triggers" category on the right and drag it into your workflow. Click on it to open the configuration form.

Here you have two fields to complete:

  • Campaign: You can either pick the group of the campaigns (all single campaigns/all automated campaigns/campaigns from a predefined category) or a specific campaign from the list to start the automation.

  • Type: Decide what action should trigger the automation. It can be message delivery (on sent), message opening (open) or the unsubscribe button click (unsubscribed).

NOTE! Only active WhatsApp campaigns are available on the list inside the trigger.

Once you configure the module and save the automation it will react on the chosen action related to the chosen campaign(s). The module doesn't react on the actions from the past.

Case Study

Name: Trigger a re-engagement email after WhatsApp message was opened.

Scenario: You’ve sent a WhatsApp message to promote an upcoming webinar. When the message is opened, you want to automatically send a follow-up email with a link to the registration page.

This flow ensures that only users who engaged with the WhatsApp message receive further communication, increasing your chances of conversion while minimizing spam risk.
